Using Social Security Disability Benefits to Enhance Elder Care

Using Social Security Disability Benefits to Enhance Elder Care: A Practical Guide

Category: Disability Law

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) can be leveraged to cover elder care expenses, such as in-home care, assisted living, or medical equipment. This is a fact that many people don’t know.

Seniors with disabilities are eligible for two key programs: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

SSDI was designed for people who paid Social Security taxes and now can no longer meet the work requirements to earn a living wage. The amount you will receive depends on work credits earned. Basically, the more you have paid into the system the larger payment you may receive.

For 2025, the average SSDI payment is approximately $1,580 per month, though this can differ widely from person to person. The maximum SSDI benefit in 2025 is $4,018 per month, but most recipients receive less than this, with many falling between $900 and $1,600 monthly, depending on their earnings record.

SSI is geared toward people who need assistance regardless of how much they have paid into the Social Security system. Typically, these payments are less than SSDI. The standard federal SSI payment is $943 per month for an individual and $1,415 for a couple. Seniors 65+ automatically meet the age criterion and must be a U.S. citizen or a qualified non-citizen.

Funds from these two programs can be used to hire a caregiver. They can also be used to buy medical equipment. Programs like Medicaid can also help pay for these services and items. The idea is to use these programs in conjunction with one another to receive the optimal healthcare.

Anyone can apply for disability on their own using the government website. An attorney can help you along with the process and increase odds of getting approved by double and triple checking the application and follow-up communication.
